At a glance
Alphabet has scheduled its third-quarter 2026 earnings call for October 28. Its prior disclosures make third-party computing capacity, capital spending and the difference between operating earnings and investment gains central questions for this preview. [1][2][3]
A confirmed date, with results still to come
Alphabet will discuss third-quarter results on Wednesday, October 28, at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time, according to its October 6 announcement. The release is scheduled to appear on the company's investor-relations website before the call. [1] No third-quarter outcome is reported here. The purpose of this October 25 preview is to identify what the forthcoming figures can clarify about Google's advertising business and its expanding cloud operations.
Cloud has a demanding comparison point
Alphabet's July 22 release reported second-quarter revenue of $119.8 billion, up 24% year over year. Google Cloud revenue reached $24.8 billion, an 82% increase, while Google Search and other revenue grew 17%. [2] These are historical benchmarks. Our analysis will focus on the relationship between segment growth and profit rather than assuming that one unusually strong quarter defines a permanent growth rate. The size and composition of the comparison period matter.
More capacity can carry a near-term price
On the second-quarter call, management said it planned to use more third-party capacity in the third quarter while building its own infrastructure, and warned of some near-term margin pressure. [3] The forthcoming report can help test that explanation. In our analysis, weaker margins alongside higher revenue would need to be assessed against the cost and duration of that bridging arrangement. It would not, by itself, prove either deteriorating demand or a successful long-term investment.
Keep the spending outlook attached to its date
In July, Alphabet put its 2026 capital-expenditure outlook at $195 billion to $205 billion. It also said most revenue from existing TPU system-sales agreements was expected in 2027. [3] Both statements were forward-looking. We will look for confirmation or revision, rather than treating the earlier range as money already spent. Purchase commitments, installed equipment, customer deliveries and recognized revenue describe different stages of the same investment cycle.
Operating performance needs its own reading
The second-quarter release included approximately $98 billion of other income, primarily from unrealized gains on equity securities. [2] Such gains can strongly influence headline earnings without representing sales to cloud or advertising customers. Our analysis therefore separates operating income from investment-related movements. The next release may have a different mix. A simple sequential earnings comparison would be incomplete unless the reader checks the corresponding income-statement lines and the company's explanation of unusual items.
The question is how growth becomes cash
A useful assessment will connect search monetization, cloud demand, capacity costs and cash generation. Our framework is to ask what customers paid for, what additional infrastructure was required, and when that spending is expected to produce returns. Those questions are more durable than a single headline growth number. Management commentary can explain timing, but expectations still need later evidence. This preview makes no forecast of the shares or of results that have not yet been released.
