A digital service still has a cost base
A trading interface may look inexpensive to replicate, but the service behind it can require software development, infrastructure, customer support and operational oversight. FTMO’s fee explanation specifically mentions the development and operation of its platform and technical infrastructure. That statement identifies categories of work; it does not disclose the company’s actual expense totals or margins. A credible analysis must keep those two claims separate. Knowing that a service incurs technology costs is different from knowing how large they are, how they scale or which customer payments ultimately finance them.
Institutional trading offers a distinct disclosed example
Virtu Financial’s 2025 annual report lists expenses involving transaction execution and clearing, communications and data processing, employee compensation, and administration. Those categories illustrate the infrastructure required by its institutional market-making and execution businesses. They should not be imported as the cost structure of an online evaluation firm. A provider operating simulated accounts may have different counterparties, staffing needs and transaction costs. The comparison is useful for identifying questions about the model, not for estimating a private evaluation provider’s expenses from a listed company’s financial statements.
Fixed and variable costs change the growth story
Conceptually, some costs are incurred before another customer arrives, while others increase with usage, sales or payments. Software development can support many users, but capacity, support workload and third-party charges may rise as the service grows. Acquisition spending can also increase faster than revenue if competition becomes more expensive. This means growth in account sales does not automatically translate into the same growth in profit. Economies of scale are possible, but they require evidence. They cannot be established by counting website visitors or multiplying an advertised fee by an unverified estimate of customers.
Ask what the provider actually discloses
Useful financial disclosure would identify revenue recognition, major expense categories, obligations, cash resources and the scope of any related trading activity. Operational disclosure can also clarify platform providers, execution arrangements, outages and customer support processes, although it is not a substitute for accounts. For a participant, these questions help explain why price alone is an incomplete measure of service quality. For a writer or analyst, the boundary is equally important: describe documented functions and clearly labeled economic mechanisms, while leaving unknown costs unknown. Precision is more useful than an impressive but unsupported profit estimate.
