A percentage needs a base
A profit split specifies how a defined amount is allocated under a particular agreement. The base might be eligible trading profit in a live account or simulated performance used to calculate a reward. Those are economically different arrangements. A headline percentage does not tell you whether every displayed gain is withdrawable, when payment becomes available or how losses and prior withdrawals affect the calculation. Before comparing offers, identify the amount to which the percentage applies. Without that denominator, a larger advertised share can be less informative than it first appears.
Official terms can vary within a single brand
FTMO’s reward FAQ currently distinguishes account origins: the one-step and Instant routes carry a 90% reward ratio, while its two-step route starts at 80% and can rise to 90% under specified programs. Topstep’s payout policy also contains a standard split and a legacy provision for certain earlier participants. These examples show why a comparison should specify the product and the trader’s applicable terms. The purpose is not to rank the firms; it is to avoid presenting one product’s headline percentage as if it applied to every account the company has ever offered.
The retained percentage is not automatically company profit
For a live trading arrangement, a retained share of realized gains can contribute to revenue before costs and other obligations. In a simulated reward arrangement, an unpaid portion of a calculated result is not necessarily cash earned in the market. It cannot simply be treated as the firm’s profit. This is an accounting distinction rather than a claim about a particular company’s undisclosed books. Technology, staff, payments, marketing and any market operations have their own costs. The headline split therefore reveals neither the provider’s net margin nor the full source of money used to pay rewards.
Compare the complete withdrawal path
A useful comparison follows the path from a displayed result to money received. Identify eligibility conditions, minimum trading activity, any consistency requirement, withdrawal caps, fees and the treatment of the remaining account balance. Separate terms that affect whether a reward is earned from terms that affect when it is paid. Then compare the same type of account over the same time horizon. A favorable percentage is meaningful only if the underlying arrangement suits the participant’s strategy and circumstances. It cannot, by itself, establish the probability of earning a payout or the financial strength of the company promising it.
