A recession is broader than one negative number
The National Bureau of Economic Research dates U.S. business-cycle peaks and troughs. Its definition emphasizes a significant decline in economic activity that spreads across the economy and lasts more than a few months. Depth, diffusion and duration matter, although an extreme movement in one dimension can partly offset a weaker signal in another. This framework is broader than the popular shorthand of two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP. GDP remains important, but the official chronology considers multiple indicators and does not reduce the economy to a single mechanical quarterly test.
Why confirmation often arrives after the turning point
The NBER aims to establish a reliable historical chronology rather than issue an immediate trading signal. Economic data are revised, and a temporary setback can look like the start of a sustained decline before more information arrives. Waiting for confirmation creates a lag, but it can reduce the need to reverse a business-cycle judgment. Traders and businesses often need to make decisions before that process is complete. They should describe those decisions as assessments of risk under uncertainty, not as proof that an official recession has already begun or that a downturn is impossible.
What the Sahm Rule actually checks
The Sahm Rule is an employment-based indicator. It is triggered when the three-month average unemployment rate rises by at least 0.50 percentage points above the lowest three-month average during the preceding twelve months. FRED publishes both real-time and current-data versions, which can differ because of information available at the time and later revisions. The rule provides a transparent way to detect a meaningful deterioration in unemployment. It does not directly measure every dimension of economic activity, and it should not be described as replacing the NBER’s dating process or guaranteeing the future path of markets.
Build an evidence set with an explicit horizon
A useful recession assessment combines employment, real income, production and spending evidence, while distinguishing levels from growth rates. A slowing economy can still be expanding, and a single indicator can weaken without a broad contraction. Record when the data were published and whether they were revised, especially when testing a historical trading idea. Otherwise a backtest can accidentally use information that was unavailable at the decision date. For a live market view, explain the horizon and conditions that would change the assessment. That is more informative than declaring certainty from one threshold or one dramatic headline.
