The quarterly result

SLB reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $9.45 billion, an increase of 5.8% from a year earlier, according to the October 23 earnings coverage in The Wall Street Journal. Adjusted earnings were $0.64 per share. The company’s investor-relations page confirms the third-quarter reporting event and provides the earnings materials. These results concern the quarter ended September 30, so the publication date should not be confused with the period during which the revenue was earned.

A smaller business with faster growth

Barron’s reported that SLB’s data-center revenue reached $230 million, increasing 23% from the previous quarter and 76% from a year earlier. The business represented about 2.4% of total revenue. That scale is important when interpreting the growth rate. A fast-growing segment can become more relevant without yet dominating the company’s financial performance. The result therefore supports a discussion of diversification, while the overall earnings picture still requires attention to the much larger established operations.

How to assess the two growth stories

Our interpretation is that SLB now invites two related but distinct analytical questions. One concerns activity and spending in energy services. The other concerns the economics of supplying infrastructure to data centers. Those markets have different customers, investment cycles and risks. Grouping them together under a single theme can obscure the drivers of revenue and margins. An investor should identify which business is responsible for a change before using it to explain the company’s overall performance.

Growth rates need a revenue base

The data-center figures illustrate why a percentage increase should always be paired with the starting scale. A large growth rate from a smaller base can contribute less in absolute dollars than a modest change in a much larger operation. The same principle applies to acquisition-driven expansion and geographic changes. This is an analytical caution, not a claim that the newer business lacks value. Its importance depends on future size, profitability, capital requirements and the price paid to develop it.

The next disclosures to examine

The useful follow-up is whether segment growth continues, how it translates into profit and cash, and how the revenue mix evolves. Company guidance should be treated as conditional on the assumptions management describes. For a trading review, compare reported and adjusted earnings consistently and separate an intraday price quote from the final close. This article presents the October 23 operating update and does not assume that data-center growth removes the company’s exposure to the energy-services cycle.
