The reported quarter

TSMC’s third-quarter 2026 results, released on October 15, showed revenue of US$46.72 billion. That exceeded its earlier guidance range of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion. Gross margin was 66.4% and operating margin was 58.7%, according to the company’s investor-relations table. These are reported company results rather than analyst estimates. The dollar revenue figure also needs to be distinguished from the company’s reporting in New Taiwan dollars when comparing earnings coverage from different sources.

What management projected next

For the fourth quarter, TSMC guided to revenue between $52.3 billion and $54.3 billion, with a gross margin of 65% to 67% and an operating margin of 56.5% to 58.5%. The company’s earnings-call transcript provides additional discussion of the assumptions behind its outlook. Guidance is a management projection, not a completed result. The key comparison is therefore between the reported third quarter and the stated fourth-quarter range, rather than treating both as historical revenue.

Why the figures matter beyond one company

Our interpretation is that TSMC’s report is useful evidence for assessing the semiconductor supply chain because it provides a direct view of a major manufacturer’s sales and expected activity. It does not, however, reveal the profitability of every customer or supplier. A company designing chips, a manufacturer producing them and a business buying computing capacity can face different economics. Strong sales in one part of that chain do not automatically settle the investment case elsewhere.

Revenue and margins answer different questions

A higher revenue outlook can coexist with a margin range that does not move in the same direction. Production mix, the cost of expanding capacity and the timing of manufacturing transitions can affect profitability independently of sales. Investors should therefore inspect both the top line and the margin assumptions. This is an analytical distinction rather than a claim that any single factor fully explains the quarter. The company’s own materials remain the reference for its reported figures and management’s stated explanations.

The next checks for investors

The follow-up is whether actual fourth-quarter performance lands within the range and whether later commentary changes the assumptions. Currency translation also matters when comparing dollar guidance with local-currency results. For an earnings review, keep actuals, prior guidance and new guidance in separate columns so the comparisons remain clear. This report does not claim a particular share-price reaction or offer a valuation target. Its focus is the verified operating update and the questions it creates for the next reporting period.
