At a glance
CME’s October 20 first-trade announcement confirms that its BCH and UNI futures expansion has moved beyond the proposed-launch stage. Contract design and liquidity now become the important questions.
Trading has begun
CME Group said on October 20 that FalconX and GSR had executed the first block trade in its new Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures. The announcement follows the October 19 trade-date listing and confirms that trading is underway. It is a meaningful distinction from the September announcement, which still described a launch subject to regulatory review. The release establishes an operating market; it does not, by itself, establish the depth of every contract’s order book. [1]
Two sizes for each asset
The product design gives traders a standard and a Micro contract for each token. A standard Bitcoin Cash contract represents 250 BCH and its Micro counterpart represents 25 BCH. For UNI, the corresponding sizes are 10,000 and 1,000 tokens. Those multipliers determine the underlying exposure represented by one contract. Comparing only the number of contracts across products would therefore conceal substantial differences in position size and sensitivity to a token-price movement. [2]
A wider derivatives menu
The September launch announcement positioned the contracts as an extension of CME’s existing cryptocurrency offering, which already included assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, XRP and Solana. The exchange attributed the expansion to demand for regulated tools covering more digital assets. That is the company’s explanation of its product strategy, rather than evidence that all institutional investors are increasing allocations. The practical change is the availability of another instrument for expressing or offsetting BCH and UNI price exposure. [2]
Settlement and opening hours matter
CME’s listing notice specifies financial settlement, using the relevant CME CF dollar reference rate at expiry, rather than delivery of the underlying tokens. It also describes round-the-clock trading with maintenance exceptions: a two-hour Saturday window and short weekday pauses. Anyone comparing these futures with spot crypto should account for the expiry and settlement mechanism as well as the trading schedule. A product advertised as available 24/7 still has documented operational interruptions. [3]
The first transaction is an early marker
FalconX and GSR’s participation identifies the firms involved in the opening block trade, according to CME. It does not tell a prospective user the spread, market impact or executable size available at every later moment. Our reading is that the more informative follow-up evidence will be sustained volume, open interest and actual quotes across contract months. Those measures can show whether activity extends beyond the initial transaction and whether the instruments are useful at the sizes a trader needs. [1]
The implication for trading plans
The expansion creates another venue and contract choice, rather than a forecast for either token. A trader considering it would need to reconcile the contract multiplier, margin requirements, expiry calendar and execution conditions with the intended position. A Micro label describes relative size; it does not make the underlying asset stable or remove leverage. For prop-account users, exchange listing also should not be confused with approval to trade the product inside a particular firm’s program. That permission requires separate verification.
