THE QUICK READ

At a glance

CME has completed initial cloud performance testing and revised the route toward production migration. The announcement concerns future infrastructure milestones, not an already completed move of all markets.

An October milestone for exchange infrastructure

CME Group announced on October 12 that it had completed initial performance testing for CME Globex in the cloud. The exchange reported improved trading round-trip times and faster-than-planned construction progress at its Aurora cloud region and co-location facility. These are company-reported milestones in a continuing project. They do not mean every CME market is already running on the new infrastructure, or that a retail trader’s end-to-end execution speed has changed by the same amount. [1]

Aurora changes the livestock timetable

The company targets Aurora availability for client testing in mid-2027, alongside the Dallas disaster-recovery facility that opened for testing in June 2026. It now plans to move livestock markets into the new Aurora region in late 2027, removing the previously intended interim move to Dallas. For firms maintaining exchange connections, that changes the sequence of preparation. The key announcement is therefore as much about the route through the migration as its eventual technical capabilities. [1]

A multi-year roadmap remains

CME’s accompanying electronic-trading notice describes production migration beginning in late 2027 and continuing through 2028. Later stages include movement to new gateway instances after the markets migrate, and a Dallas disaster-recovery transition in 2029. These are scheduled phases, not reported completed events. The extended timetable also explains why one successful test should not be read as a single switch-over date for every product, client connection and supporting service used by an exchange participant. [2]

Testing is the immediate operational task

The notice says the Dallas sandbox remains available and points clients toward testing environments as preparation for the migration. It describes future access options in the Chicago region and emphasizes operational continuity through the transition. For a trading firm, our interpretation is that realistic rehearsals matter alongside headline speed: connections, order messages, recovery procedures and internal monitoring need to work together. The published roadmap supplies planning milestones; it is not evidence that each participant’s systems are already ready. [2]

Market data has a separate cloud history

Google Cloud’s CME case study describes an earlier effort to distribute real-time and historical market data through cloud services. That work helps explain the existing relationship, but receiving data through cloud infrastructure is different from relocating an exchange’s trading systems. A business can already use cloud-delivered information while the production market it observes remains on another infrastructure timeline. Separating those functions makes the latest announcement easier to interpret and prevents an older data-service capability from being mistaken for a new migration milestone. [3]

What the update means for prop and futures firms

Our assessment is that the practical issue is preparation, rather than a new trading signal. Firms that depend on futures execution can use the revised schedule to coordinate with their connectivity and platform providers, while distinguishing exchange plans from the readiness of their own software. A cloud architecture does not establish a strategy’s profitability or remove market risk. The evidence to watch next is the opening of the announced testing environments, more detailed performance results and confirmed product-by-product production dates.
