At a glance
Coinbase plans to convert remaining GYEN balances to USDC during October 26–30. The exchange timetable is distinct from GMO Trust’s issuer-level wind-down and November 11 redemption deadline.
An exchange conversion starts next week
Coinbase says GYEN remaining on its platform will be converted to USDC between October 26 and October 30, 2026. The conversion is scheduled at the prevailing market rate when processed, with no transaction fee. As of October 25, this is an upcoming event, not a completed migration. The exchange notice links the change to the wind-down of GYEN by its issuer, GMO-Z.com Trust Company, and says customers who accept the automatic conversion need take no action. [1]
The transfer cutoff comes first
Coinbase plans to disable GYEN sends and receives on October 26 and stop supporting GYEN deposits and withdrawals after conversion. Its notice tells customers who do not want conversion to transfer to a compatible self-custody wallet before that date. It also warns that later deposits may be unrecoverable. The key operational distinction is between the date access changes and the multi-day period during which balances are converted; the latter is not an extension of the transfer window. [1]
The issuer’s process began in May
GMO Trust’s May 15 announcement started an orderly wind-down of both GYEN and ZUSD issuance and a 180-day initial redemption period ending November 11. Minting stopped, while redemption remained available to account holders in good standing. The issuer said new applicants seeking to redeem existing holdings could still undergo its onboarding checks. That process has its own account and banking requirements, so moving a token off an exchange does not automatically complete an issuer redemption. [2]
Two routes, different valuation mechanics
GMO Trust’s later notice specifies that direct redemption during the initial period is at one Japanese yen per GYEN and one US dollar per ZUSD, with fiat sent to the account holder’s linked bank account. That differs from Coinbase’s market-rate conversion into USDC. The distinction is particularly relevant to GYEN because it references yen rather than dollars. Our interpretation is that readers should compare the currency and conversion mechanism, rather than assume all stablecoin exit routes deliver an identical asset. [3]
What follows the November deadline
The issuer says eligible tokens remaining after November 11 will enter a separate mandatory redemption process involving USDC. Supported networks, wallet screening and technical conditions matter; Stellar holders, for example, need an appropriate USDC trustline. GMO Trust expects USDC delivery by the end of 2026 but does not promise simultaneous processing. These are issuer-level arrangements and should not be conflated with Coinbase’s October schedule or treated as a guarantee covering every wallet and every representation of the token. [3]
A market-infrastructure story with practical dates
The immediate news is the exchange deadline, while the broader lesson concerns how custody and issuer arrangements interact during a token’s retirement. A holder’s route depends on where the assets sit and which institution is providing the conversion or redemption. Records of balances, conversions and the applicable notices can help distinguish those steps afterward. Readers should consult the linked official notices for account-specific instructions, because this preview describes published arrangements and does not establish an individual holder’s eligibility or final proceeds.
